The Nikken Full Spectrum Lamp

In a UK study published in “The Responsible Workplace,” it was shown that windows were the number one determinant of the occupants’ level of satisfaction with a building! This effect is due to lighting’s ability to affect the human body in two ways: directly, in the form of affecting what and how well we are able to see, and indirectly, in the form of effects on our mood, behaviour, and even hormonal balance.

Human beings weren’t meant to be indoors all the time. Sunlight is the natural form of light, and its day and night cycle promotes better sleep, daytime alertness and energy. However today we spend an awful lot of time inside - some estimates say 90% of our time is spent indoors on average. This is not enough in order to gain the natural health benefits of the sun and daylight. Furthermore we are spending huge amounts of time exposed to unhealthy artificial light including mobile phone and computer screens.

But what can you do about this? Given that our modern ways of living tend to restrict our outside time (and some people depending on their jobs and their locations may not see sunlight at all for months on end) the best alternative is to seek out some artificial full spectrum lighting.

The Nikken KenkoLight brings the outdoors into your home or office with full-spectrum natural light as invigorating as sunshine — without glare, eyestrain or the sun’s potentially harmful UV radiation. It features energy-saving LED technology and flicker-free operation, for use as a desk lamp, room lighting, in the office, or the bedroom. The lamp comes with an adjustable arm which makes it ideal as a desk spotlight or a background mood light. Equally suitable for home, work, office or bedroom, the lamp has three brightness settings, a LED display clock, an alarm (with gradual waking setting if desired), and USB port.

Our eyes respond better to artificial light which closely replicates the intensity and range of colours found in natural daylight. People who work under full spectrum light report feeling less tired and moody and experience reduced eyestrain. These types of lamps are also beneficial for alleviating the effects of SAD (seasonal affective disorder) which is naturally problematic during the long winter months.

Less measurable but most important is that good lighting simply makes us feel better. Stop and think about it for a moment. If we walk into a room (whether it be a shop, an office, or someone's living room) with nice lighting, it really does makes us feel better. There is a reason mood lighting is called mood lighting! Compare this with spending any time under flourescent tube lighting common in offices and factories. We wouldn't dream of having these monstrosities installed in our homes so it is a mystery why so many still exist in the workplace.
